For Austria, the clear takeaway is that wheelchair curling can only grow if we build both infrastructure and community. While we face challenges due to our limited facilities and lack of a player base, there are also unique opportunities.
In Kitzbühel, where the only Austrian curling hall is located, there is strong demand for inclusive sports activities. Organizations such as Lebenshilfe and Diakonie regularly organize group activities and excursions for people with special needs. By cooperating with them, we could establish inclusive curling sessions, not only for wheelchair athletes but for a wider group of people with different needs.
Such programs would both meet an existing demand in the district and provide an innovative, inclusive sporting option that could attract many participants. This, in turn, could form the foundation for building wheelchair curling in Austria more broadly.
