Antique amphitheatres and roman shenanigans!

This week I visited Lugdunum with my visiting friend from Austria and tried on some togas ...

So from this post on I'm gonna write in english, since my flatmate from Dublin is always first to like my posts but can't actually read them! It will also be great practice writing in english for me, since I haven't done that much of it lately.

This Tuesday we paid a visit to the gallo-roman museum on top of the hill near the great Fourvière basilica. The museum is built into the hill and has a total of 4 stories, with one underground storage layer. From outside, you can only see about two of them! They have a great collection of everything roman, ancient statues as well as graves, hair decoration or vases.

Firstly, we watched a video on where the different parts of the ancient city were located. Sadly, it was in french, as was everything else (there were tiny sections in english but the french text was always longer). As my friend from Austria didn't speak french, I had to translate for her. This is the only thing I didn't like about the museum, the exhibition in general had a lot of variation and activities for all ages, including one where you could play roman games and dress up (yep, we did that).

After our visit, we went outside to see the wonderful amphitheatre just next to the museum. There were actually two, one big one and adjacent to it a smaller one. From the vantage point on top you also had a great view of some of the inner city, but for really seeing everything I would recommend going up to the basilica. We also did some singing to "test the soundscape", but we stopped when people actually noticed - I'm staying longer here so I might as well not attract attention. In total, it was definitely worth our time and I might come again with other visitors who don't speak french and need a translator!
