Wine tasting!

When in France ...

Yesterday I went quite spontaneously to an event of the wine society at INSA, a tasting of different wines from the Rhône region. There were 6 different wines, 4 reds and 2 whites (one of them sparkling). Before starting, we were given a short introduction to the different regions where the wines originated from and how to taste wine properly (it felt very fancy). This all took place in a lecture hall (Amphi, short for amphitheatre), and if all the lectures at uni were like this, I'd stay there forever!

For every wine, they had a powerpoint page with facts and what you should eat it with. We started with a semi-dry aperitif wine, then a cuvée and after that 3 wines made from the same grape in the same year, only different in region of origin (and price obviously). The last one had great character, although I liked all of them. With the wines we had cheese and sausages, together with bread. For the last one, which was a rather sweet sparkling wine, we had raspberry tartelettes. After each tasting we talked with our neighbours about the different aromas we could distinguish while smelling it and of course about how it felt on the palate. The atmosphere in general was quite relaxed and I learned a lot of french wine vocabulary, for example different grape names and other vocab (i.e. the "Weinrebe" in german is called "cépage").

They have these tasting events once a month and I'm sure to join the next one! Now I have to go to a more theoretical lecture about macromolecular chemistry, wish me luck! :D
